What's So Funny Bout...
In today's Dinette Set, the artist's level of certainty about what is supposed to be funny here does not match the reader's:

Hard to say. I regularly check four or five books out of the library, and return them half-read. I give them about 80 pages, then if they're not all that good, I stop reading them. Usually that's when I'm trying out a new author.
Maybe Burl is such an airhead that reading half of a book is just as good as a whole one, because he doesn't remember or care what goes on in it? Maybe Burl just wants to move his eyes back and forth, like people who read the ingredients to their cereal while they're eating it.
