It's interesting, how much sangfroid the Pennys have. I mean, they win a substantial amount of money, Burl saves a child's life, these are things that may never happen to normal people. Yet, Burl takes things so calmly. It's fascinating.
once again, ms. larson: the rule is "show, don't tell."
Who gives someone $50 for saving their kid's life? Either you're really rich and like buy the person a new car, or you don't offer money at all. $50 is creepy and says strange things about the value you place on your kid and your feelings about helpful strangers.
